The present report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea is submitted pursuant to the General Assembly

Summary

The present report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea is submitted pursuant to the General Assembly resolution 72/188.  In this report, the mandate holder provides an overview of recent developments in the human rights situation in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, in particular after the country opened up to peace and denuclearisation dialogue with the Republic of Korea and the  United States of America. The Special Rapporteur analyses the implications of these talks for human rights and provides recommendation as to how this opening can be used to improve the human rights situation in the  Democratic  Peoples Republic of Korea.  The analysis is based on the results of recent testimonies of people who left the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, as well as additional information collected during the mandate holders latest visits to the Northeast Asia region.
