NK children are interrogated in drug crackdowns

North Korean authorities have revived the method that had been discontinued to use under Kim Jong Ils regime in their drug crackdowns efforts- interrogation of children at schools.

Security officials in charge of schools are intimidating and interrogating elementary school students to investigate drug offenses, and their parents have been immensely shocked about it, a source in South Hamgyong province said.

For example, a security official in Sapo district of Hamhung, capital of South Hamgyong province, drew pictures of paraphernalia for injections of drugs on the board in an elementary school and asked the seven-year-old students in the class what they were. If some of the kids gave the right answers, the official interrogated how they knew about the items. The official then persuaded and threatened the students to confess that their parents used drugs. Their parents were arrested on drug offenses, based on their childrens confessions, the source said.

The state security departments use of children to crack down on adults has infuriated many citizens, sources said. This method was banned under Kim Jong Ils regime in the fear of causing public disaffection.
