President Park Geun-hye met with Michael Kirby, the former Chairman of the recent United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights in the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, at Cheong Wa Dae on May 30th.

During their meeting they exchanged views on the activities of COI, the human rights situation in North Korea and the South Korean Governments policy toward the North.

President Park noted that the interest of the international community in North Korean human rights had been growing due to the report from the COI.

She also said that specific findings and recommendations in the report in regard to crimes against humanity set a critical milestone for international efforts to improve human rights in North Korea.

In response, Kirby highlighted that the COI activities were in the interests of everyone in both Koreans and that the body didn't have animosity toward any party.

In addition, he expressed high expectations of the COI report translated into Korean. He said if its translation is completed, people in North Korea, a UN member nation, would be able to get to know about the process of the establishment of the COI and the findings of its investigation.
