Shin Dong-Hyuk, a North Korean defector born inside political prison Camp 14 (Kwanliso), received an honorary doctorate degree from Dalhousie University.

Dong-Hyuk grew up completely unaware of the world outside Camp 14 and witnessed dozens of executions while inside, including those of his mother and brother. He escaped from the camp in 2005, but the scars of torture are still with him.

In spite of the hardship he has suffered, Dong-Hyuk still spread a message of love to Dalhousie University students on Tuesday.

"Go [to] places where there is no love - and teach love, and go to places where there is no happiness - and teach happiness, he voiced.

Assistant professor Robert Cuish expressed that his students read Dong-Hyuk's book and became motivated to take action against North Korea by organizing peace marches, demonstrations and writing to members of Parliament. In addition, Cuish said Dong-Hyuk is changing the way people look at North Korea's regime.

Dong-Hyuk said the Dalhousie University graduates have given him hope moving forward.
