Class Conflict Rises in Potato Country

The presence of Central Party cadres at a cooperative farm in Baekam County, Yangkang Province has been causing unrest in the region due to their corruption and excess, Daily NK reported.

In the early 2000s, the Chosun Workers Party set about updating the nation's potato farming industry by sending discharged soldiers and farming equipment to the region. But the party cadres sent to oversee the project also brought along the corruption of Pyongyang.

According to a source in the region, the three cadres from Section 4 of the Central Party Agriculture Department eat pork almost every day, while locals only get to eat meat once or twice a year. This is especially irksome during the lean spring period when many are running out of rice.

The cadres were first dispatched to the farm in 2008, the source told Daily NK. Not only do they have their own housekeeper, they also regularly purchase and raise pigs. As a result, the cadres have come under attack for living well while workers starve. The source noted that last month a man in the unit indeed starved to death.

In addition, the cadres take large amounts of potatoes when they visit Pyongyang. The farmers can only watch their harvest disappear, sometimes even being required to help load the cargo. Every spring and fall, the authorities tout the abundant harvests in the region, but the locals see nothing but corruption.
