UK Parliament Discusses North Korea Human Rights

On Tuesday, the House of Commons of the UK Parliament met to discuss the situation of human rights in North Korea.

Specifically, the House discussed the recent report of the United Nations commission of inquiry on human rights in the DPRK, the BBC's World Service being broadcast into the DPRK, the plight of Christians in the DPRK, and China's policy of forced repatriation of North Koreans.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Mr. Hugo Swire, stated that he had held discussions with his Chinese counterparts regarding refoulement, that he had approached the BBC about broadcasting its World Service into North Korea, and that he welcomed the recent UN report and emphasized that the UK needed to "look at the most effective way of holding the DPRK to account."

With regard to the overall situation of human rights in North Korea, Mr. Swire stated, "I believe that when the curtain is finally lifted on that country, we will see evidence of human rights violations that surpass anything we have seen in any other country in the past 50 years."
